Inspiration: How God Revealed Himself in the Bible
Series: The Bible - Why We Can Trust It, Part 2
Berean Bible Church, October 14, 2001pm
Inspiration is the “how” of God’s revelation of himself in the Bible.
2 Timothy 3:16-17: “All Scripture is God-breathed (inspired) and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.”
2 Peter 1:20-21: “Above all, you must understand that no prophecy of Scripture came about by the prophet's own interpretation. For prophecy never had its origin in the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.”
What Inspiration Means
A. The Holy Spirit superintended over the writing of the Bible.
B. The very words of the Bible (“verbal”), not just the thoughts, were inspired.
C. All the words of the Bible (“plenary”) were inspired.
D. Inspiration took place through the pen and personality of the writer.
E. Inspiration took place within the writer’s cultural setting and historical situation.
F. The result was God’s Word: Written, Authoritative, Trustworthy, Free from error.
(Paul Enns, Moody Handbook of Theology, 160).
What Inspiration Does Not Mean
A. Mere human inspiration.
B. Mere religious genius.
C. Mere dictation.
Inspiration Allows For
A. The use of sources - Luke 1:1-4, genealogies.
B. Estimations (various levels of precision), 2 Chronicles 2:2 – 70,000 and 80,000 are estimates.
C. Figurative language, Psalm 23.
Other Scriptures to Consider:
Jeremiah 1:9: Then the LORD reached out his hand and touched my mouth and said to me, "Now, I have put my words in your mouth.
Acts 1:15-17: In those days Peter stood up among the believers . . . and said, "Brothers, the Scripture had to be fulfilled which the Holy Spirit spoke long ago through the mouth of David concerning Judas, who served as guide for those who arrested Jesus-- he was one of our number and shared in this ministry."
Galatians 1:1, 11-12: Paul, an apostle--sent not from men nor by man, but by Jesus Christ and God the Father, who raised him from the dead . . . I want you to know, brothers, that the gospel I preached is not something that man made up. I did not receive it from any man, nor was I taught it; rather, I received it by revelation from Jesus Christ.
2 Peter 3:15-16: . . . just as our dear brother Paul also wrote you with the wisdom that God gave him. He writes the same way in all his letters, speaking in them of these matters. His letters contain some things that are hard to understand, which ignorant and unstable people distort, as they do the other Scriptures, to their own destruction.
