How to Apply the Bible to Your Life
How to Understand the Bible, Part 6
Berean Bible Church, February 10, 2002pm
The Bible – What’s the Point?
2 Timothy 3:16-17 - The Bible is supposed to make a difference in your life.
James 1:22-25 - The Bible is meant to be practiced, not merely read.
Just a Thought . . .
Gideon’s fleece – is this an example to follow?
1 Corinthians 11 – Why do we not practice head coverings for women? Why do we practice the Lord’s Supper?
Can a believer wear blended clothing (Deut 22:11)?
Prohibtion of women pastors – was this cultural or is it permanent?
Is “having all things in common” the ideal for today (Acts 2)?
When is the last time you greeted someone with a holy kiss?
Discovering Principles
A. A principle is a short statement of a general, universal truth.
B. What does the passage say about God – about his character, about his actions, about his demands for humans?
C. Principles give timeless truths that can be applied in different ways in different cultures.
D. Principles must be consistent with the clear, general teaching of Scripture.
Discovering Principles - Examples
A. The Good Samaritan, Luke 10:25-37: Be compassionate to the people who are around you.
B. “Greet one another with a holy kiss,” 1 Cor 16:20: Express Christian love and community.
C. “Do not neglect to meet together,” Heb 10:25: Gather regularly in community with other believers.
D. “You shall not have two kinds of weights or two kinds of measures, large and small,” Deut 25:13-16: Be just and honest in all your dealings.
E. What does the Bible say about TV?
What About Cultural Issues?
A. Discover the context, then and now.
What is different?
What is the same?
B. Is there a specific problem being addressed?
C. What group of people is it addressed to – one particular church, Christians in general, Israel, the nations?
D. To what extent does it reflect the cultural standards of the day? Is there a principle that can be applied in our own cultural ways?
Dealing With Examples
A. Gideon’s fleece (Judges 6:36-40).
B. 1 Corinthians 11 – head coverings and the Lord’s Table.
C. Footwashing – an ordinance of the church (John 13:14-17)?
