The Importance of Observation
Let the words speak for themselves.
Dont assume the meaning and then start reading. Start reading to discover the meaning.
Question your own presuppositions.
Study the Context
Author
Kind of writing
Time and place
Audience
Purpose for writing
Place in biblical, salvation history
Context in the book - whole book, section, preceding and following paragraphs
Notice The Big Picture
Outline or chart the whole book
Notice major breaks
Discover the main sections
Further sub-divide the sections
Look for unifying themes of the sections
Look for an overall main theme that unifies the sections
Examine The Details
Notice . . .
A. The meaning of words in context
B. How words are put together: (For example, identify the subject of the sentence. God is love, love is God? How these are put together makes a huge difference; they don't mean the same).
C. The presence of figures of speech
D. The structure of the paragraph or unit: Not just how words are put together in a sentence, but how sentences are put together in a paragraph, etc.
Ask . . . Who, What, When, Where, Why, How
Take Another Look At The Big Picture
Re-evaluate your previous observations about divisions and sections.
Re-evaluate your understanding of the various themes of the sections.
Re-evaluate your understanding of the main theme of the book.
How does the overall theme relate to your understanding of the details?
