“Why His Name is Jesus,” Berean Bible Church, December 23, 2001am
Ruling that Christmas is celebrated by non-Christians as well as Christians, a judge Cincinnati, Ohio, in December 1999 threw out a lawsuit challenging the constitutionality of observing Dec. 25 as a federal holiday. U.S. District Judge Susan Dlott said in her dismissal of the lawsuit that just as Christians observe Christmas as a celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ, non-Christians celebrate the occasion to welcome the arrival of Santa Claus.
Rather than being distracted by a holiday for Santa Claus, Christmas time is a great occasion for us to remember why we worship Christ.
I. We worship Jesus because he came to die in our place.
A. Luke 2:21-32 – From the very beginning of his life on earth, it was made clear why Jesus was here. Vs. 21, name of Jesus, Matt 1:21, “Yahweh is salvation.” He came to save, to redeem.
B. Romans 5:6-11
1. Vss. 6-8: Christ died as our Substitute – meaning of “for us” is “on our behalf” (as in, pay a bill on your behalf). Various wrong views: moral influence, example, payment to Satan, God showing hatred of sin. And it was not just that he was full of potential for greatness, but never reached it. He accomplished what he came to do – to die in our place. Death is what our sin and wrongdoing demanded, and God willingly came to earth – to die in our place.
2. Vss. 9-11: Christ’s death brought Reconciliation – former enemies, brought together.
II. Accept a life-long relationship with Jesus, as his gift to you.
We don’t talk about Santa Claus all year long, it is not a relationship. But Christ wants an ongoing relationship with you.
A. Former enemies can become friends. Trust him today.
B. As a believer, grow in your relationship with Christ; keep it healthy. This means, spend time with God (prayer, word), grow in character, depend on God, worship him, show love for God and others . . .
We give gifts out of love (mostly). John 3:16 says, “For God loved the world [to such an extent] that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” This was an expression of God’s love. He gave his life for you out of love. Accept his gift.
