“God in a Body, part two” Dec 16, 2001am, Berean Bible Church
The world is in desperate need of hope. But hope merely tied to a holiday is only temporary. If the world and people are in need of change and hope, how is Christ changing the world, and how can we partner with him to change the world?
I. God served humanity by becoming a man.
We worship Jesus because, as God, he came down to our level.
A. Matthew 1:18-25 – Immanuel, God with us. Galatians 4:4 – “But when the time had fully come, God sent his Son, born of a woman...”
B. John 1:14 – The Word became flesh and lived among us. (Ex 33:7-11 - Tabernacle.)
C. Philippians 2:1-8 – Being in the form of God, he took the form of a servant.
II. Because he served us, we must serve him and other people.
This was God’s “strange” way of changing the world. What ways might we have suggested? Force, invest money, campaign as King . . . or destroy . . .? Instead, he identified with our weaknesses (he faced temptation, got tired, got hungry, faced pressure from people). He lowered himself to our level. Here is our response:
A. Serve Christ
Receive, don’t reject, him (John 1:12 – “Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God”).
Worship and serve him (John 1:14).
B. Serve People
The church is the “Body of Christ.” We are the hands and feet of Jesus. And we are to follow his example. Phil 2:3-5 – “Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves. Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others. Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus.” John 13, Jesus washed disciples feet, told them to follow his example of servanthood (vss. 14-15).
Jesus still changes the world one life at a time, and he uses us to do it. Here are several ways to serve . . . Encourage your family, give something away to someone who can use it, help someone with a project, sit in quietness with someone who has lost a loved one, spend time with someone who is lonely, give a word of grace and forgiveness to someone who has failed, commit a random act of kindness for a co-worker, show and share verbally the love of Jesus Christ.
