Mark 5:1-43, Power for a Changed Life
Berean Bible Church, July 23, 2000am
The CEO of Coca-Cola once said, ‘My job is to sell Coca-Cola, to see that as many people as possible are able to enjoy it.’ Drinking a coke does not change anyone’s life. It quenches a thirst temporarily; the gospel does so forever. The reason this church exists is to see the lives of people change positively.
Jesus has the power to change lives. That’s what gives us hope as a church, believers.
3 Principles about Jesus’ power to change lives . .
I. Jesus’ powerful work leads to dramatic changes, Mark 5.1-20
A. It results in a dramatic difference, vss. 1-10, 15
– Someone who seemed “beyond hope;” compare to people: the local drug dealer; high school kids on the edge; long-time self-sufficient people; people hostile to Christians. 1 Corinthians 6.9-11.
B. It results in a message to tell, vss. 18-20 (Gentiles would not seek to disrupt Jesus’ mission like unbelieving Jews might.)
Some things in life are too important NOT to share.
II. Jesus’ powerful work is based on faith, not status.
A. Jairus (for his daughter) was a man of means, respectable, vss. 21-24, 35-43
B. The unnamed woman (for her incurable bleeding) was “unclean,” poor; vss. 25-34
III. Jesus specializes in hopeless situations.
A. The demon possessed man was far beyond hope.
B. The incurable woman had given up hope long ago.
C. Jairus’ daughter was now dead, from which there is usually no return.
God has the power, do we have the faith to step out? Or do we go through life forgetting that God’s power to change lives, including our own is there all the time?! Jesus has the power: rely on it.
