“Founded on the Bible,” January 14, 2001am, Berean Bible Church
Our church, and our lives, need to be built on a solid spiritual foundation – The Bible. In 2 Timothy 3.10-4.5, Paul is passing the baton. He is nearing the end of his earthly life, and he passes on to Timothy important truths about the foundation for Timothy’s ministry – God’s word.
I. The Bible is the standard of truth.
It answers questions and disputes about heaven and hell, right and wrong (morality), sin and salvation from sin through faith in Jesus Christ. The Bible is from God, who is the source of truth (2 Tim 3.16). Timothy had a solemn obligation to declare God’s message because of the falsehoods that would abound (4.1-5).
II. The Bible is a life-changing book.
The Bible leads people to salvation, because it declares the message and story of salvation (2 Tim 3.15). It is also considered to be useful (3.16-17) to bring about true teaching, rebukes, correction, and training in how to live righteously. It is able to help men and women of God become fully equipped to do God’s will and carry out good works. Paul said in Romans 1.16, “I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, because it is the power of God . . .” Has your life been changed by God’s message found in the Bible?
II. Three challenges:
A. Be a student of the word. Check it out for yourself (2 Tim 3.14, “continue in;” 4.13; Acts 17.10-12, the Jews at Berea were noble because they investigated the Word for themselves).
B. Let the Bible change your life. Respect it, believe it, submit to it,
We are influenced and can be changed by what is around us. You learn the language and actions of the environment you surround yourself with. John Bunyan said, “This book [the Bible] will keep you from sin, or sin will keep you from this book.”
C. Share it (share the gospel; rebuke false teaching; lovingly deal with the sins and faults of other believers; encourage and comfort those in need of it, 2 Tim 4.2).
