Joshua 4-5, “4 Things to Remember About God,” Berean Bible Church, Nov 26, ‘00pm
Reminders are designed to call something to your attention, to point something out, to cause you to notice something. We need reminders for bills, school projects, and our spouses birthday! Post-it Notes are helpful, as are high-tech “e-reminders.” It is easy to forget God and what he has done for us and expects of us.
We need to have reminders so we remember 4 things about God and your relationship to him.
1. Joshua 4.1-5.1, Remember he is your strength!
The stones of remembrance were memorials to the power of God in making a miraculous way to cross the river.
A. Vss. 4-7, When the kids asked what the stones mean, it was an opportunity to tell about what God did. Informal spiritual education of the next generation is important. Engage kids in dialogue. Discuss TV, events, people, church, difficulties, reason for choices. Review the stories of the Bible, what God has done in history for his people.
B. Vss. 4.19-5.1, two reasons for remembering and reminding others: that nations would know God’s power; and that Israel would fear.
Be creative in finding ways to remember what God does on your behalf through his strength. Find printed verses that are meaningful. Find special personal objects that remind you of a commitment you made, or a time when God really came through in a special way. Practice journaling.
2. Joshua 5.2-12, Remember he demands holiness!
From verses 2-3 and Gen 17.9, circumcision was a sign of the Abrahamic covenant. They are set apart physically from the rest of the world. It is a sign of being a part of the covenant community. It was also related to idolatrous sexual activity, it was a visible symbol to avoid spiritual adultery and sexual idolatry.
We are to be different (not weird), not following the morals and priorities of the world.
Rom 12.1-2 says, “Don’t let the world squeeze you into it’s mold” (NLT “Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think”). Be holy from the inside out!
3. Joshua 5.10-12, Remember he is the one who provides.
God moved from a daily miracle of food to natural processes for providing food, but God was still providing! Trust God amid changes! Don’t trust in the manna, trust in God! When everything falls into place, trust God. When it all falls apart, trust God.
4. Joshua 5.13-15, Remember he is in control!
Joshua had to learn submission to leadership. He let God have control. In Joshua 4.14, it was God who was exalting Joshua. God exercised leadership and control through his servant Joshua, who was committed completely to him. Joshua qualified as a leader because he followed the true leader of the people.
There were major challenges ahead for Israel, and they would need to think back on these reminders. The same is true for us.
